On April 26, 2025, I had the immense honor of photographing the wedding of Hanna and Harrison — a day brimming with love, laughter, and vibrant spring beauty. Set on the beloved campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, their celebration was a heartfelt tribute not only to their relationship but also to the place where their love first bloomed.
A Setting Steeped in Meaning
Western Michigan University is a place filled with architectural charm and natural beauty — a unique blend of historic buildings, lush gardens, flowering trees, and peaceful fountains. Hanna and Harrison chose this location with deep intention. It’s where they studied, laughed, dreamed, and ultimately met each other. Every corner of the campus seemed to hold a memory, making it the perfect backdrop for such a meaningful occasion.
What made the day even more symbolic was that it coincided with commencement weekend — a time of new beginnings. As students celebrated graduation, Hanna and Harrison celebrated a new chapter of their own, surrounded by those who had supported them along the way.
The Ceremony at Kanley Chapel
The couple exchanged vows at Kanley Chapel, one of the campus’s most iconic and spiritual landmarks. As guests entered, they were greeted by the gentle hum of anticipation. The chapel’s 1960s-era-stained glass windows, designed by students, filtered the sunlight in a kaleidoscope of warm colors that danced across the walls — a magical, almost ethereal light show that made the space feel alive.
Hanna looked radiant in a timeless gown with delicate lace detailing, her bouquet a wild and whimsical mix of spring florals. Harrison waited at the altar with emotion in his eyes as she walked down the aisle — a moment that seemed to pause time itself. Their ceremony was filled with emotion, tears of joy, personal vows, and the quiet presence of deep, enduring love.
A Stroll Down Memory Lane
After the ceremony, we took a few moments for portraits across the campus, capturing Hanna and Harrison in some of their favorite spots — including a particularly special one: The Library Bar & Grill. This was where they had shared late-night chats and began falling for each other. We recreated a few moments from those early days, giving their wedding album a nostalgic, storybook quality that added even more personality to their day.
Exploring Campus for Wedding Portraits
As a photojournalistic photographer, I’m always chasing more than just beautiful poses — I’m drawn to the candid moments that can’t be recreated: laughter that bursts out unprompted, a tear slipping down a cheek, the glance exchanged when no one else is looking. That’s where the magic lives.
And with this wedding party? The magic came easily.
We traveled all over campus to find the most stunning backdrops for their wedding portraits — from the bubbling Miller Fountain to the sleek lines and modern architecture of Sangren Hall, to the creative vibe of the WMU Art Center. Every spot brought a new energy and a new chance to capture the spirit of the day.
The wedding party was beyond incredible — totally game for every fun, weird, and delightfully chaotic pose I threw at them. Whether it was jumping, twirling, striking dramatic stances, or pretending they were in a fashion editorial, they brought so much personality and joy to the shoot.
A Vibrant Celebration at The Fetzer Center
The reception took place at the Fetzer Center, which was beautifully transformed into a garden-like setting. Hanna and Harrison’s love of nature and color was reflected in every detail — from the lush greenery and vibrant florals to the soft candlelight that flickered throughout the room. It felt like spring had joined the party.
The room was filled with family and friends from near and far, and the love in that space was undeniable. The speeches — oh, the speeches! — were a perfect mix of touching advice, heartfelt memories, and just the right number of embarrassing stories to keep everyone laughing (and blushing).
As dinner was served, toasts rang out filled with stories of childhood antics, college pranks, and the kind of sentimental moments that stick with you long after the lights dim. The emotional resonance was palpable.
A Night to Remember
Once the music started, the dance floor never emptied. From the couple’s first dance to a perfect father-daughter number and spontaneous group dances, the energy was electric. There was laughter, singing, and moments where everyone — no matter their age — was on their feet.
One of the most touching parts of the evening was watching Hanna and Harrison take quiet moments throughout the reception just to be present with each other. Whether it was a quick forehead kiss, a hand squeeze, or a shared smile, those in-between moments were just as powerful as the big ones.
Final Thoughts
Hanna and Harrison’s wedding was more than just a beautiful day — it was a celebration of legacy, connection, and joy. It honored the past that brought them together, the community that surrounds them, and the bright future they’re building hand in hand.
As someone lucky enough to capture these memories, I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of this story. Congratulations, Hanna and Harrison — your love is vibrant, genuine, and truly inspiring. Here’s to all the chapters ahead.
