Family photoshoots are always full of surprises — and the Wilson family brought the perfect mix of style, chaos, laughter, and a little bit of unexpected weather to their downtown Grand Rapids session.
We kicked off our afternoon exploring the heart of the city, where the Grand Rapids skyline offers a stunning blend of old-world charm and sleek, modern elegance. From every corner, there’s something new to work with — bridges, rooftop parking ramps, flower walls, stone circle benches topped with blooms, and modern buildings with an elegant flare — all creating backdrops that are both versatile and inspiring.
This lively group of seven embraced it all from the start. Right away, their coordinated outfits brought personality and pop to every shot — the two little girls glowing in matching hot pink, white, and black flowered dresses, twirling and skipping with unstoppable energy.
Maya looked effortlessly elegant in a tied, black open-back dress and black sunhat, adding a chic contrast to the urban backdrop. The guys — including Patrick, the steady, smiling anchor of the family — kept it crisp in black polos and black shorts, creating a clean, cohesive look that tied everything together.
We wandered first to the iconic Blue Bridge, where the cool tones and river views brought a sense of openness and connection. From there, we made our way to the bold LOVE sign, where laughter and hugs were in no short supply. Every stop felt like a new chapter — flower walls bursting with color, stone benches wrapped around blooming flower beds, and even the top of a parking ramp, where the skyline stretched behind them in dramatic fashion.
The Grand Rapids Art Museum was a perfect mix of modern structure and quiet charm — ideal for those slightly more composed shots, but still full of life thanks to the Wilsons’ easygoing energy. We ended our dry stroll in front of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, its classic design a perfect contrast to the city's sleek architecture.
Then, Grand Rapids did what Michigan does best: surprise you.
As we stood under the extended glass roof of the art museum, the sky cracked open and a full-on downpour hit. With no umbrellas in sight, we had no choice but to make a run for it — or rather, embrace the chaos.
The two little girls huddled under my jacket, trying their best to avoid getting even more soaked, while the rest of us — including Patrick, leading the way with calm determination — made the rainy walk back toward the hotel. There was no complaining, no stress — just laughter, soaked clothes, and the kind of joy that makes moments like these unforgettable.
We even kept walking — rain and all — straight to dinner.
This session had everything: hug attacks, sibling rivalry, unplanned weather, spontaneous dance moves, and more laughter than I could’ve asked for.
The Wilsons didn’t just show up for a photoshoot — they showed up for life, exactly as it unfolded, storm and all. And because of that, they walked away with more than just photos — they walked away with a memory they’ll talk about for years.
